An Alaskan Malamute is a type of dog breed that you can describe as majestic. It looks very much like a wolf, and its fur is among the softest coats that you can ever feel on a dog. This is why the Alaskan Malamute is among the most popular breeds in the world.
However, due to its popularity, it also created a demand where enterprising people end up abusing these amazing creatures for financial gain. The Alaskan Malamute ends up being bred for money.
An Alaskan Malamute named Odin is a great example of how illegal dog breeders tend to neglect these dogs just for the sake of financial gain.
When rescuers found Odin, he lived outside chained. Initially, the rescuers didn’t even know that Odin is an Alaskan Malamute. The neglect and abuse over the years took a toll on Odin’s appearance. Instead of a soft, fluffy, black fur, he nearly had no hair at all.
Odin was also extremely malnourished and dehydrated that the rescuers can see his bones. Along with other neglected and abused animals where they found Odin, They rushed Odin to the veterinarian.
The veterinarian found that Odin suffered from a lot of diseases. Other than having mange, he also had skin infections, intestinal worms, and heartworms resulting from years of neglect and abuse.
Odin also had dental problems which suggested that he suffered for a long time from abuse and neglect. Odin needed special care for him to recover.
So, the rescuers assigned Odin to foster care with a woman named Sydney Schelkopf. When Odin came to Sydney’s home, she noticed that he’s so tired from his ordeal that all he wanted to do is to lie down.
Sydney stated that he didn’t even know how to behave inside a house. However, Odin slowly started to feel safe with Sydney, and he began to realize that Sydney’s there to care for him.
Sydney’s gentleness towards Odin made him calm and comfortable only after the second night. In fact, he even climbed onto the couch and her bed to snuggle with her. No matter how much abuse and neglect Odin experienced from humans, he still trusts us.
Although Odin started to heal emotionally, he still had physical issues that he needed to deal with. Sydney supported him all the way.
Eventually, Odin started to heal physically and began to grow his fur back. He learned how to be a dog again thanks to Sydney’s love, care, and patience.
Here’s a video showing what Odin went through and how Sydney saved him and cared for him.
